Why Is Anua More Expensive in South Africa?
If you have searched for Anua skincare in South Africa and then checked Anua's official international pricing, the difference is hard to ignore.
It is a fair thing to question.
A serum selling for $24 internationally does not simply become R384 here because the rand sits near R16 to the dollar. By the time that bottle reaches a South African customer, it has been through international freight, import VAT, customs processes, clearing and forwarding, foreign exchange, warehousing and every normal cost of running a local retail business.
A South African retailer typically has to account for:
- International freight
- Import VAT
- Customs duties where applicable
- Customs clearing and forwarding charges
- Foreign exchange costs and bank fees
- Local warehousing
- Packaging and fulfilment
- Delivery infrastructure
- Returns and customer service
- Payment processing fees
- Marketplace or retail fees
- Marketing
- Currency movement
- A sustainable retail margin
Import VAT is also more involved than adding 15% to an overseas shelf price. SARS calculates VAT on imported goods using the customs value, applicable customs duty and, depending on the origin of the goods, an uplift applied to the customs value.
So comparing a South African retail price directly against a converted international price is a benchmark. It is not a calculation of anybody's profit. That distinction matters, and we will come back to it.
The more useful question is not "why isn't it R384?" but:
How much more should Anua reasonably cost here, and how much do local retailers actually differ from each other?
We decided to look at the numbers.
What Anua Costs Internationally
Anua publishes retail pricing through its official international channels. Popular products sit in a fairly accessible band:

Those converted figures give South African customers a reference point. They do not represent what it costs to put the product in a Cape Town warehouse and get it to a customer in Bloemfontein, for example.

What Our September 2026 Anua Price Comparison Found
We checked five major South African retail groups, which we refer to collectively as Big Retail.
Not every retailer stocked every Anua product online. We only counted a store where we could verify a like-for-like listing for the same full-size product. Minis, masks, alternative sizes and unclear "from" prices were excluded rather than used to flatter the result.

What makes this useful is that it does not assume Big Retail is always more expensive. It isn't. One verified listing for the Niacinamide serum came in below our price on the day we checked.
That is exactly why a comparison should look at several retailers rather than picking one convenient price.

We confidently verified three comparable Big Retail listings for the same full-size 30ml serum. All three were more expensive, at approximately R699. That is R220 per serum.
We found other online offers during the research, but where the exact size or listing could not be established with confidence, we excluded them rather than use a shaky price to strengthen our own argument.

What This Actually Tells Us
It does not tell you that RuZu is always the cheapest place to buy every Anua product. We are not claiming that.
Prices change. Promotions run. Marketplace sellers adjust. Stock levels move.
What the comparison does show is that meaningful price differences exist between South African retailers selling the identical Anua product. Across the four examples, RuZu Beauty was cheaper than:
- 3 of 4 verified Big Retail listings for the Niacinamide serum
- 4 of 4 for the PDRN 100 Booster Toner
- 3 of 3 for the Peach 70 Niacin Serum
- 3 of 3 for the Rice 70 Glow Milky Toner
That is a more honest statement than claiming every retailer is always more expensive.
Our July 2026 Study Found a 66% Median Premium
In July 2026, we ran a larger analysis of Anua pricing on one of South Africa's biggest online retail platforms.
We identified 46 named Anua listings and established 31 defensible like-for-like matches against official international products. Across those 31 matched products, the median premium over the converted official US retail price was approximately 66%.
Some products sat far higher. Others were much closer to the converted price. We used the median because it shows the middle of the dataset rather than letting one unusually expensive listing distort the picture.
There is an important caveat: that 66% was a snapshot. It does not mean Anua always costs 66% more in South Africa. Since that study we have already seen prices move in both directions as promotions appeared, marketplace sellers adjusted and new stock landed.
This is why every price comparison should carry a date. A number without context becomes misleading quickly.
Retail Price Is Not the Same as Profit
When a product sells at Big Retail for well above the international price, it is tempting to assume the difference is pure profit. That would not be fair.
We do not know what another retailer pays for stock. We do not know their supplier pricing, rebates, marketing contributions, distribution agreements, freight costs, overheads, commercial terms or required margins.
So we cannot tell you what another retailer earns on a particular Anua product, and we will not pretend otherwise.
What we can compare is the public selling price, because that is the number the customer actually pays.
Do Freight, VAT and Import Costs Explain the Difference?
Partly. The costs of importing Korean skincare into South Africa are real and we carry them too.
But there is another side to this conversation that is worth being open about.
We do not have the buying power of Big Retail.
A major retail group can place substantially larger orders, negotiate stronger volume discounts, consolidate bigger shipments, reduce freight cost per unit, spread customs and clearing across more units, secure better commercial terms and hold far more inventory.
We operate at a much smaller scale. We have to balance holding enough stock to meet demand against tying up working capital in inventory. Smaller shipments can mean a higher freight cost per unit. Smaller purchase orders do not attract the volume pricing available to a national chain buying thousands of units.
We still fund product purchases, international freight, import VAT, applicable customs charges, clearing, forwarding, foreign exchange, banking charges, local transport, warehousing and fulfilment.
So when we sell an Anua product below Big Retail pricing, it is not because we sidestep the normal costs of importing skincare. In some cases our buying and freight economics are probably less favourable, simply because of scale.
So How Can We Sell Anua for Less?
It comes down to how we choose to operate and how we choose to price.
RuZu Beauty was built as a specialist online beauty retailer, not a national retail chain. Our pricing starts with the economics of the individual product. We look at our actual landed cost, international retail pricing, local market prices, freight, import costs, currency risk, operating expenses, required gross margin, customer affordability and repeat purchase behaviour.
We do not believe the correct selling price is automatically the highest number the market will tolerate.
Skincare is also different from a once-off purchase. If you find a cleanser, toner or serum that suits you, you are going to need another one. A product that feels affordable the first time but becomes difficult to replace every few months is not really accessible.
The aim is a balance between a sustainable business for us and a sustainable routine for you.
Why Repeat Purchase Matters
K-beauty has become intensely trend driven. There is always another viral product, ingredient or routine.
Effective skincare does not require constantly buying something new. Consistency does more work than novelty.
If your regular routine runs cleanser, toner, serum, moisturiser and sunscreen, a R100 to R200 difference on each product changes the cost of the whole routine substantially.
Take the examples above. A customer paying R220 more for a serum and R200 more for a toner is already R420 down on two products alone.
That is why individual product pricing matters. We are not only trying to make the first purchase attractive. We want you to be able to replace the product when you finish it.

The Bottom Line
Imported Korean skincare will rarely cost the same in South Africa as it does internationally. The costs of bringing authentic Korean skincare into the country are real and they matter.
But those costs do not mean every retailer has to charge the same price.

That does not mean Big Retail is always more expensive. It means South African Anua pricing varies significantly, and comparing prices is worth your time.
Our approach is to source authentic Anua through authorised channels, understand our true landed cost, and then price at a level that works for both our business and our customers.
We may not have the purchasing power of Big Retail. We may not import at the same scale. But we can compete by staying focused, operating efficiently and being deliberate about the margin we add.

Methodology
Five major South African retail groups were checked during this research and are referred to collectively as Big Retail.
For each product, a retailer was counted only where we could verify a comparable full-size listing for the same Anua product. Where size, variation or advertised price could not be confidently matched, the listing was excluded. This means the number of verified Big Retail comparisons varies by product.
RuZu prices were confirmed directly against RuZuBeauty.com on 12 September 2026: Anua - Niacinamide 10 + TXA 4 Serum R479, Anua - PDRN 100 Hyaluronic Acid Booster Toner 250ml R415, Anua - Peach 70 Niacin Serum 30ml R479 and Anua - Rice 70 Glow Milky Toner 250ml R479.
Big Retail checks found three major listings at R699 for the Niacinamide serum, with one other verified full-size offer below our price. The PDRN toner showed verified Big Retail pricing between approximately R439 and R679, with all four verified offers above our R415. Verified listings also showed R699 for the Peach 70 serum and R679 for the Rice 70 toner.
The historical 66% figure refers specifically to our July 2026 study of 31 defensible like-for-like Anua matches on one major local platform. It should not be read as a permanent market-wide South African premium.
